Dogs are not spiteful
One of dog owners’ most common mistakes is to think that these wonderful living creatures have the conception of spite. Besides being a fundamental error from an ethological point of view, sometimes there is the risks of becoming a danger for the safety of our dearest four-legged friends.
It happens to many families to leave their puppy at home alone for several hours.
Upon their return, in addition to complaining neighbors because the dog spent most of his time barking, crying or howling, the house is a disaster. Split pillows, destroyed sofas, chairs with gnawed legs: your house has been transformed in a real funfair for dogs, and your despair is more than understandable. Unavoidably, you take the broom or the vacuum cleaner, you remove all traces of what you believe to be a kind of “artwork” of your dog without sparing yourself from scolding him properly. You see it with the tail between his legs, relegated to a corner looking at you with sad eyes and you think: “ Good, he learned the lesson”.
So the next time, you go out quietly, after buying back everything that was destroyed during the dog’s battle VS the house, certain to find it in the same conditions where you left it when you closed the door behind you.
But it is not: again, the neighbors complain, the sofa seems to have exploded along with the cushions, your slippers, and everything that has always been found out of his mouth. “Ah! You did it out of spite!”.
Are you quite sure?
THE DOG DESTROYED THE HOUSE OUT OF SPITE
According to this conception the reasoning behind this event is the following:
your four-legged friend considers you his world and he doesn’t like you leaving him alone at home to do your things. So what does it do? He thinks: “Oh yeah? They leave me here alone? I know how to teach them a lesson, I take the couch they paid 500 Euro and destroy it!”
Nothing more wrong.
A dog does not reflect this way. The sphere of his behavior reflects the condition in which he lives in and a destroying behavior, as we have described above, denotes a manifestation of stress and malaise.
Established that the concept of spite is not part of the dog’s thinking, the reasons for such a reaction may be due to:
- Separation anxiety
HOW TO TELL IF YOUR DOG SUFFERS FROM SEPARATION ANXIETY OR IF HE IS SIMPLY BORED?
if at the time of your departure your puppy remains quiet to sleep in his kennel, but on your return you will find a nasty surprise, then it’s probably boredom.
In this case, you will have to try to leave your dog with something that stimulates him physically and mentally, a game of intelligence, a gnawing bone. Let him take a nice, tiring walk before leaving him alone, at least he will sleep and he will not be bored.
If the dog should start crying immediately after you leave, then it could be separation anxiety. It is a rather serious problem that a good professional dog trainer will help you solve based on the needs of your dog and your family
What is important to understand is that it is not normal for a dog to destroy the house when he is alone.
There is always a basic problem that needs to be solved, in order to protect your valuables and the dog itself by ingesting something dangerous.
